At my martial arts lifeskill center October is an extremely busy month. We have activities for Red Ribbon Week, National Anti-Bullying Awareness Month and Halloween. For Red Ribbon Week we educate our students of the horrors of drug abuse. On Friday, October 28 we’ll have a free community service workshop on Halloween Safety. For National Bullying Awareness Month we will teach our students to defeat the bully in a none violent way or what Bruce Lee called “the Art of Fighting without Fighting.” National Anti-Bullying Awareness Month is meant to help raise awareness and educate children and their parents about this growing issue.
Bullying is the most common form of violence in schools, parks and even in the work place. In a recent study more than 43,000 teens between the ages of 15 and 18 attending public and private schools were surveyed about bullying. Over half of them had been victims of bullying or had bullied other students.
As a martial arts instructor, fully certified Martial Arts for Peace Bully Buster instructor and retired law enforcement officer I can tell you that the best way to defeat the bully is in a non-violent manner. Yet, to be able to avoid a fight with a bully you must know and have the confidence that you could defeat the bully if he attacked you. I always say the the difference between a martial artist and a bully is respect and kung fu starts and ends with respect.
I recently saw a great commercial on Bullying about Bruce Lee the creator of the fighting system I teach Jeet Kune Do. It is narrated by Bruce Lee’s top student, training partner and best friend Dan Inosantos. Inosantos is my teachers Paul Vunak’s teacher. You can see this video on my website DoralKungFu.com/Bully-Busters or on my Facebook page Facebook.com/AntasFitnessandSelfDefense. The text below is the verbal portion of the commercial. Yet, to fully appreciate it you must watch the video.
He was a young man with no real direction. But, most young men were taught by their fathers and Grandfathers and first came discipline and a certain humility, but he just wanted to fight.
My friend was born in the hour of the dragon in 1940 the year of the dragon.
His name was Lee Siu Lung many know him by another name.
People ask me how did he go on to create he greatest martial art ever? He went to the old man to learn to fight and the old man said these words. First you must learn how not to fight. that advice created a legend.
As you read above when Bruce Lee started doing Wing Chun Kung Fu with his teacher Ip Man he came to learn to fight. Ip Man told him “First you must learn how not to fight.” Learning not to fight is the difference between a martial artist and a bully or common street thug. Through our martial arts and bully busters program we teach children how not to fight.
