Rape, domestic violence, abuse, muggings and purse snatching, women face all of these treats daily. Crime is on the raise. Most crime on women are attempted by males. As a Women you are at a high level of risk. It takes the Police approximately 22 minutes to get to the crime seen. On Saturday, March 2, at 1:30PM Anta’s Fitness and Self Defense along with over 50 martial arts schools worldwide will host “The Damini Project,” a free community service women self defense, rape prevention, situational awareness workshop.
The Damini Project originated from the Jeet Kune Do Athletic Association and is dedicated to the memory of Jyoti Singh Pandey, the victim of a brutal gang rape in Delhi, India on December 16th, 2012. The rape resulted in her death, two weeks later, in a Singapore hospital. Because the laws in India require that the victim’s name remain undisclosed unless there is express permission from the victim or the victim’s family in the case of death, the Media reported the crime nicknaming her Damini, which means “lighting” in Hindi. Upon learning of the crime, thousands of members of the community began protesting across the country, demanding justice for Damini and changes in the laws of the country to provide better protections against such crimes.
The Project has one guiding goal: To put an end to the current Rape Culture attitudes that result in violence against, sexual assault, and victimization of women throughout the globe. The goal of The Damini Project is Empowering All Women to Value Themselves and Fight for their Safety. The motto of The Damini Project is “The Beginning of the End of Rape Culture is Coming!”
