I titled this article “Ageless Warrior at Fifty Six and Beyond” because most people believe that after Thirty life starts to go down hill. Yet, I’m in better shape today than I was in my teens, thirties, forties and fifties. The only time that I looked better physically was in my mid to late 20’s. That was primarily because I was a competitive bodybuilder. I dislocated both shoulders in a karate tournament and had to stop lifting the way I use to. I was told by doctors that my shoulders would get even worse with time. They said that I would never be able to workout with weights or do martial arts again. I was heartbroken and depressed. Bodybuilding and the martial arts had changed my like and was my passion.
I love to defy the odds and prove negative people wrong. Today, both of my shoulder are still injured and now my back is also injured. That has not stopped me from working workout with weights, Achieving the rank of Master in Kung Fu, having black belts and/or instructor levels in Muay Thai, Krav Maga and Jeet Kune Do. I am also a student of Gracie Jiu Jitsu., I will not stop, quit or give up on my life passion fitness and martial arts. I call this concept of anti-aging, living fit and fearless “The Ageless Warrior.”
The Ageless Warrior is nothing new. The Ageless Warrior is more like the Israeli Biblical hero Caleb. Caleb was a spy and great warrior from the tribe of Judah. Caleb was a man of great faith and was allotted land and villages in the vicinity of Hebron. By this time he was 85 years of age and he was as strong as he had been a generation earlier when he first traveled through Canaan as a spy. He proved his strength and power by driving out the inhabitants. Caleb was a true Ageless Warrior. With healthy eating and physical training you too can be an Ageless Warrior.
Many people after they have kids they devote all their spare time to taking the kids to activities. They get out of shape and forget their dreams and goals. They start living their life through their children. One of my purpose in life is to teach people that age is just a number and that they can be fit and fearless at six or ninety-six. I feel that you can be the person that you taught you could have been at any age. I have over 40 years experience in the martial arts and almost 40 in fitness. If I can be in the shape I’m in at fifty-six can you Imagine what I can do for you?
One of my secretes to staying young and fit is the martial arts lifestyle. I believe that martial arts and fitness are one. Living the martial arts black belt lifestyle which is eating healthy, strength training, martial arts training, indomitable spirt, not giving up and consistency will make you an ageless warrior. I believe in leading by example. That is why I train everyday. One of my pet-peeves is the out of shape martial arts instructors and fitness instructors. How can they teach you or your child discipline and to get in shape when they don’t have the discipline to eat healthy and workout?
My role model is Jack Lalane the fitness guru who died at 97 and lived fit and fearless. I also admire Jhon Rhee the father of American Tae Kwon Do who is super fit. Rhee’s philosophy is having the wisdom of 100 years with the body of a 20 year old. I remembers speaking to Grand Master Rhee at the NAPMA World Martial Arts Conference in 2003. When Rhee learned that I was 46 at that time he said, we can change people, you in Miami, me in Washington D.C. and others in their cities. Mr. Rhee is a visionary and a true Ageless Warrior. Let’s not forget Sly Stallone star and writer of Rocky who gets in better shape with age.
In my thirties I worked out with weights a bit, yet I dedicated my life to martial arts training and building my relationship with Jesus Christ. In my forties I focused on growing one of the most successful and prestigious martial arts centers in the nation, getting certified in functional fitness such as kettlebells, Battling Ropes, Fitness Kickboxing etc. Reaching and surpassing all these goals at forty-nine years old I decided to re-build my body and get in the best shape of my life. It has been a slow yet steady road. At fifty-six years old I am living fit and fearless. My goal is if it’s Gods will is to be in better shape and look better at 60 years old than today and continue my quest as an Ageless Warrior.
