The state of Bahia of all saints, the city of Santo Amaro de Purificacao Bahia, Brazil is the nucleus of Capoeira; the birth place sort of speak. Capoeira is a Martial Art form that combines elements of combat, `rhythm, and acrobatics. Historians claim that it was developed by African slaves who were brought over to Brazil around 1537. The slaves disguised their training by making Capoeira appear to be a form of dance, when in fact, they were training for combat and self defense.
The music in Capoeira was used to communicate information among the Capoeristas, as the slaves trained and plotted for abolition, the slave owners believed they were singing and dancing. Capoeira music also speaks of life, friendships, and battles played inside the “Rhoda”. Music instruments used in Capoeira are Birimbau, Atabaque, and Pandeiro.
When two Capoeristas “play”, it is usually done inside a circle or “Rhoda” formed by a group of their peers. This “game” is a conversation through movement which can take on many shades of meaning and allows the Capoeristas to practice their skill against a friendly opponent.
Capoeira's has four principle branches that were formalized in the first half of the twentieth century following Capoeira's legalization. These four principal branches are Angola, Benguela, and Iuna.
